MEDITATION - From Shel White

I've been thinking about balance. We are continually told or telling others to live a balanced life between work and play, exercise and rest, care and worry, sleep and activity, thinking well of ourselves but not being conceited. Of course we are to somehow balance our consumption of all four food groups. With all that is going on in our lives, can we achieve stability between serving ourselves and serving the Lord? How balanced are we spiritually? Does God get much of our time and attention? God does not want to add another 'should' to all of our balancing acts. God wants to help us to get equilibrium in all areas of our lives. In fact God provides strength to our muscles needed for balancing.

A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but an accurate weight is his delight. Proverbs 11:1

I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. 2 Corinthians 8:13-14

Following our Lord together in hope,
Shel

MEDITATION - From Shel White

The Apostle Paul is probably the Bible's best example of someone never being too bad to be used for good by God. It seems that most humans spend quite a bit of energy either justifying their bad behaviors or patting themselves on the back. We never quite get the correct perspective on ourselves; we either believe we are inadequate or we deny that we have limitations. We need to look to God to find our proper self-perspective. Our Lord sees our gifts and abilities and has great confidence in us. God also knows our foibles, foolishness and faults. He has expectations of us. Not too much and not too little.

"The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life." 1 Timothy 1:15-17

Following our Lord together in Love,
Shel

MEDITATION - From Shel White

When we are stressed, preoccupied and/or depressed, our ability to observe beauty or assess danger can be greatly compromised. We often do not even know it. Most of us hate it when we discover our perspective is incorrect. We like to believe we are accurately comprehending what is going on, and therefore in control. None of us has the complete picture. Thank God our Creator does! We can trust the Lord to have the full perspective and that He wants the best for us! If we can only let God direct us to what is the object of attention. If we could, we would observe the greatest of beauty and the greatest human needs.

Letting go so we can let God work,
Shel

MEDITATION - From Wendy Komori Stager

The 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

This week, the largest governing body of the Presbyterian Church is gathering in Minnesota. Our own Nancy Grabow is there as a voting commissioner from the Presbytery of San Francisco. The General Assembly (GA) is where faithful pastors and elders gather together to discern direction for the church. I encourage you to follow some of GA online at the General Assembly website.

Presbyterians are a connectional church. We believe that discovering God's will is done in community and in prayer. We do not receive instructions from a Pope that all of us need to follow, nor do we get to make our own decisions in a vacuum. However, making decisions as a community is not easy. There is a lot of conflict and controversy at GA. One can observe by the votes that not everyone senses that God is moving in a certain direction. Some of the decisions made a GA may be ones that you and I vehemently disagree with.

Some of my colleagues are disgusted with the political wrangling at GA. I personally appreciate that we do not all have to agree on 100% of the issues 100% of the time. In the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) we are invited to disagree with one another while continuing to love on another. Most of all, we are called to love Jesus Christ and to be in unity about following Christ. HOW we do this is up for a lot of discussion.

I think that the discussions at GA are also the discussions of our own congregation. Someone sitting on the other end of the pew may think differently than you about a theological or social issue. Yet, we are called to remain one church and one family with Jesus Christ as our head. Let us together find our unity and our diversity in faith.

Wendy

GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPDATE - From Nancy Grabow, Delegate

Wow. I repeat, wow.

I had no idea what I was getting into....nor how the Lord would bless me in so many ways. It is astonishing and yet I suppose predictable how the Lord and Spirit are so present in everything we do.

I've been to "Riverside Conversation"; I've been to my own committee meetings (Bills and Overtures) and other committee meetings: I observed the Church POlity committee, and had no idea there could be SOOOOOOOOOO much discussion about the definition of youth/young adult/adult/senior adult, or about the impact of authoritative interpretations on amendments to motions, etc.!! I've shared communion with 7000 other people in a hall that wasn't full; I've witnessed a baptism of a child with water from the many parts of the globe. I don't think I've ever prayed or worshipped every day every in my life nor felt the present of the Holy Spirit so much at once!!

There are rainbow scarves; there are people with all colors of skin; there are debates and disagreements and love and care; there are hugs and laughter and meals and coffee. I've even found a glass of Riesling a couple of times!! :) :)

I must go visit a few more committees this afternoon before we meet in Plenary tomorrow...but I decided I needed to at least send you a quick message of how I'm getting along. The people of Minnesota are incredibly helpful and friendly, and I thank you, St. Andrews and the Presbytery for this opportunity!!

God Bless you, and may God help all of us discern the mind of Jesus and the will of God!!

Nancy from "Minneso-o-ta" (said in a sing-songy voice!)

MEDITATION - From Shel White

Sometimes asking ourselves questions and meditating on them in spirit of prayer can reveal spiritual insights about God and ourselves. As I have been thinking about how this Sunday lands on July 4th this year, three pondering questions have come to my mind: What does it mean to be a good and faithful citizen of the United States? What does it mean to be a good and faithful citizen of the Kingdom of God? And what do I do if and when those two citizenships are at cross purposes? They sure did for Jesus.

No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Matthew 6:24

Seeking to love God and Country,
Shel

MEDITATION - From Wendy Komori Stager and the Mission Team in Crestline, CA

Greetings from the San Bernardino Mountains! As I write this, we have just finished our third full day of our trip and everyone is safe - but a bit tired. Scraping old paint off a redwood-sided church is tedious, boring work, but we have kept our good spirits.

It became clear to us from the first evening of our arrival, that God is the one who has led us here. The people of the Community Presbyterian Church here have said over and over again that we are an answer to their prayers. They have been praying for signs that God wants them to continue as a church - and our arrival is one of those signs. As a group, we are awestruck and humbled by the knowledge that we are the instruments of God. We feel like we are a bunch or ordinary folks who wanted to help a little, yet the difference we are making for the people in this community is much larger than we ever imagined.

When is a time when you did a small act of service that made a huge difference in someone else's life? Can you see yourself as an instrument of God?

Wendy and the Mission Team

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

What makes 'home' home for you? Can home go with you wherever you go? Most define 'home' as a place where we can be ourselves, a safe and relaxing place. We all have a need for a place where we find acceptance and nourishment and rest. Jesus said that he lived without a place like that for him: Jesus said to him, 'Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.' Luke 9:57.

We know that Jesus prepares a place for us when we leave this world. I also believe God has a loving place for us to enter right now; a place to rest, relax and drink living water. This place is most accessible when we are silent and still and open to God's spirit.

Grace and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

We are experiencing a rather windy and rainy May. It is hard to predict the weather for the week ahead, or even what to wear in the morning. The Holy Spirit is sometimes described as the wind. John 3:8 - "The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." God may choose to appear in our lives in unpredictable ways. God does not appear on command, like an obedient Labrador. The Holy Spirit has the character of wildness and freedom. Are you ready for the Spirit to blow through your life? It may invite you to move, change, or wake up!

Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

So many of us will be walking over our new St. Andrew's cross this Sunday on the way from our Sanctuary to our new Activity Center. It looks like an X but before it became the symbol for the Scottish flag, it reminded the Christians in Scotland of the first disciple, Andrew. We are thankful that Andrew said 'Yes' to Jesus. It is great that we will see that cross on Pentecost Sunday. Andrew, like all the rest of the disciples, did not launch into ministry until the Spirit set him on fire on Pentecost! After Pentecost he traveled to Byzantium to set up a church before moving further west. On Sunday, we launch our ministries in our new Activity Center on Pentecost. I think St. Andrew would be proud. God is sure pleased whenever we depend on God's Spirit to expand our ministries in our church and in our community.

Acts 2: 25-26 I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my flesh will live in hope.

I pray all of us will consciously catch God's Spirit, breathe in God's breath, and boldly do and be and speak the love and good news of our Loving Gracious God.

Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

Genesis 1:27 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Many times when I ask someone where he or she sees God, they often tell me a story about a natural place such as the ocean, the redwood forest, or a quiet stream. I can admit that when I am enjoying a scenic view, it is easier for me to see God in a beautiful river than in the silhouette of a hiker crosses in front of it. Yet, out of all that God has created, only humankind is created in the image of God.

Each human being whether they are an infant or an elder, a stranger or a close friend, a person with disabilities or a runway model are all made in the image of God. Understanding God's creation this way leads to a call to treat those around us as precious children and to see others as God sees them. Who around you do you see today as someone made in the image of God?

Wendy

KEY UPCOMING EVENTS - places to connect - places to grow in your faith:

  • WORSHIP:
    • May 16, 2010 - Youth Sunday 9:00am and 10:30am Our youth will lead us in worship. Bibles presented to 5th & 12th Graders
    • May 23, 2010 - Pentecost Sunday - Please wear red or orange. - Holy Communion 9:00am and 10:30am Preacher: Shel White on Acts 2 - Dedication & Celebration of Activity Center following second service
  • Called Congregational Meeting Sunday, May 16 at 11:30am - A called congregational meeting is scheduled for Sunday May 16, immediately following the second worship service, at 11:30 am in the Sanctuary. Its purpose is to update you on construction costs and pledge activity relating to the Activity Center, and vote on a proposal to modify our loan availability. While the building project remains on schedule for timely completion this month, the opportunity to complete several important additional projects became apparent during construction. These include upgrading specifications to 'three-phase' electrical power (facilitating provision of air conditioning, should we later choose, to all church buildings, instead of a subsequent, expensive retrofit); making audio/visual equipment available in the Activity Center; providing adequate storage in the new meeting rooms; and completing the re-paving of St. Andrew's parking lot. Despite the additional costs, our resources remain sufficient to service our loan through 2013, but with a somewhat smaller safety margin than originally anticipated. Session concluded that preserving adequate financial flexibility remains vitally important. As a result, Session recommends increasing St. Andrew's loan availability from $1.7 million to $1.8 million, necessitating a vote by the Congregation as required by Synod, our lender. Please plan on attending this important meeting.
  • Teens & Technology Wednesdays, May 19 and May 26 at 7pm - Worried about technology's impact on your teen and family? In this two-part series, Dr. Marc D. MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

The Hebrew word chessed is not easy to translate. It is the main word for love in the Old Testament. If we were to combine 'steadfast love,' 'loyalty' and 'commitment' into one word, then we would be close to all that chessed encompasses. This kind of love is dependent on dedication and commitment, not on warm, fuzzy feelings. In fact, when our relationships with family members, friends and our Lord does not contain warm feelings, this is the most important time for loving action. True love does not require affectionate feelings; loyalty is required no matter how we feel.

Thank You Lord for the loving commitment of our mothers. Please surround with an extra measure of your peace those who miss their mothers or miss their children or who long to be mothers. Heavenly Parent, thank you for your unending steadfast love for us!

Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

What makes life worth living for you? Many may answer that question with: 'good health,' or 'my family,' or 'doing something meaningful for someone else,' or 'living debt-free.' This Sunday, I am responding to that question with a few principles that Jesus taught us. For example, if we are experiencing true peace with God, we do not have to rely on externals (like money, healthy relationships or meaningful activities) to make life worth living. With God's peace within us, those extra blessings are the dessert, not the main course of our spiritual and emotional nourishment.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. John 14:21

May your blessings abound,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Jennifer Cross Miller

This Sunday we are celebrating Children's Ministry Sunday. This is an exciting day for the church, because not only are we celebrating the end of another year of Kids Kingdom, we are also celebrating our children and all that they offer to our communal worship experience every week of the year.

Kids are cute. And noisy. And definitely mischievous at times. But they're also incredible vessels for the Holy Spirit.

When I first began my children's ministry work here at St. Andrew's, I thought that part of my job was to 'teach' the children about the bible, God and Jesus. And that's what I set out to do each Sunday and Wednesday. But it didn't take long for me to see that the children were also teaching me.

When we sit together in our circle and listen to stories, the children are given the space and freedom to ask some pretty tough questions about God and Jesus, questions that stir my own learner's heart.

When we pray together in our circle and I hear their voiced prayers for family, friends, animals and the world around them, I am moved by their sincere concern and love for others.

So now, instead of 'teaching' our children, I spend our time together each week just 'being' with them. Listening to them talk about their lives, hearing their prayers, laughing at their jokes, marveling at their wonderful energy and creativity.

And I invite you to do the same this Sunday. Come and be with them in worship. Honor them with your presence and an open heart to truly hear their message. God is at work in them and through them, and if you let them, they will show you the Kingdom of Heaven.

Peace and blessings to all you beloved children of God,
Jennifer Cross Miller

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

How does Easter make your life any different? It's great not to worry about death, but what about day-to-day living? Easter says God was not just a past event. Easter moves our Creator into our now, as well as our future. Easter says that God's power can smash the biggest enemy AND that our day-to-day stresses, worries and crises are powerless in the face of our loving God.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. Romans 6:5-8

Happy Easter everyday!
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

We are about to celebrate an incredible victory over the worst enemy ever - death. We know the story well. We have heard the news. The news is old. It is difficult to get excited about old news. When the news was brand new, Jesus' disciples ran with excitement. They realized that nothing could keep their friend down. If Jesus was not extinguished by death, neither are we! No matter how old this good news is, it is truly the most exciting message we will ever hear. Let's hear it again for the first time and sing and shout "Hallelujah!"

But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened. Luke 24:12

Happy Easter!

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

When was the last time you dreaded the week coming up? Jesus sure did dread this upcoming week. The worst week of his life started with Hosannas on Palm Sunday and went way down from there. He could have run away from Jerusalem. For our sakes he did not. The more we go on the journey from Palm Sunday through the night that he was betrayed, and died, we can soar even more with Jesus into Easter. Take the journey with Jesus and find that extreme love of the Lord. Then experience the joy of gratitude.

We will meet in the church parking lot at 8:15am to carpool to 132 Riverside Drive in Bay Point. Some work will be done at neighboring houses. MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

The season of Lent is one where many people choose to take on a spiritual discipline for the season. Some people give up something like chocolate or soda. Other people make the extra effort to pray for 10 minutes per day.

This season, I have engaged in a simple, end of the day exercise call the Examen. At the end of the day I ask myself these two questions:

1. At which moment today did I feel joy and completeness? Which moment would I love to relive and savor?
2. Which moment today do I wish had been different? What do I wish I could have changed?

I conclude with a prayer, thanking God for the good moments and asking for God's help with the changes in my life.

Blessings,
Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

How do you picture God? Popular culture sometimes depicts God as a white man with a long beard standing on top of a fluffy cloud. Michelangelo portrayed God as a stern and muscular man reaching out to create Adam. Or maybe you picture God as a warm, surrounding color.

Our idea and image of who God is can affect how we relate to God. If we see God as a stern Father figure, it may be difficult to come to God and seek forgiveness. If we see God as an abstract image, it can be challenging to feel like that God can personally care about you.

The gift of Scripture is to help us to gain a deeper knowledge of who God is and how we can relate to God. There are many, many images and facets of God's character that are revealed in the Bible. The clearest picture of God we can get is in the face of Jesus. This Sunday, as we continue to explore the story from John 8, we will examine how Jesus responds to her and to all sinners.

Blessings,
Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

We get angry when we hear about some criminal getting off completely free. We long for people to get their just punishment. We want judges to be fair - not too much grace, nor excessive punishment. Jesus was all about making the law fair. Most of us agree, if a man and a woman get caught violating the law, both should face judgment - not just the woman. In part of my message this Sunday, we will be looking at why the Old Testament law is sometimes applied unequally to men and women. We know that in our culture, formally and informally, laws get applied justly sometimes and unequally other times. Most of the time, we do not object when we get an extra measure of leniency. However, we generally feel better overall and in the long run when we get just punishment for our screw-ups. There is relief when the our debts are paid. Perhaps it is not good for us to get off scot-free!

"Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered." Psalm 32.1

Make time for your Lenten journey each day,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

In our culture, we tend to avoid talking about a word that the Bible uses quite frequently. It is a very good word - but not popular: sin. Just think what our world could be like if we had a little more respect for personal sins. Jesus turns sins into good news. When we acknowledge that we are sinners, and bring our screw-ups before the Lord, we find the joy of forgiveness and renewal. When we are honest with ourselves, we are less condemning of others. Can you imagine such a world? Hey, that would mean we were closer to God's Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven!

"If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." 1 John 1:9-10

  • World Day of Prayer Friday, March 5 at 9:15am - Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, CA - World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year. Each year a different country serves as a writer of the WDP worship service. For 2010, the women of Cameroon developed the theme, "Let everything that has breath praise God." They invite us to "Africa in miniature," a country rich in diversity, where climate and culture are widely varied, but where people are bound together by a love for music, family and faith. WDP's motto, "Informed prayer leads to prayerful action," affirms that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence. We are encouraged to think about actions that we can take to further support the 2010 theme. This year's WDP service will begin at the first sunrise on March 5 in the Pacific region and follows the Earth's orbit westward. Locally, the service will begin at LOPC at 9:15 for coffee with the program running from 10 to 11:15 am.

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Are you ready for the work of Lent? Some look forward to Lent, some dread it, others just avoid it with a multitude of distractions. Lent is a designed gift of time of introspection and taking interior stock of ourselves. If you are a self-critical person, the inward journey can be painful. That is why I believe God wants us to take this journey, but only when we are covered with a good dose of God's grace. God's grace provides a much more accurate illumination of our interior. With the Lord's grace, we can enjoy some of our beauty as well as identifying characteristics or patterns that need changing. Our Lord loves to join us in this journey of healing.

"All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It's God's gift from start to finish! We don't play the major role. If we did, we'd probably go around bragging that we'd done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing." Ephesians 2:8-9 (The Message)

Make time for your Lenten journey each day,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

Remember the last time you were at the top of a hill, mountain or on a lookout. Maybe you hiked there, maybe you drove there, or maybe you were carried there on the top of a ski lift.

When we are in high places, we see into the distance. Our perspective changes - even grand buildings or bridges or rivers look tiny. We celebrate being above the fray and deeply inhale the mountain air. Mountains are special places and sacred places.

Jesus climbed a mountain to pray and to reflect. While he was up there, his close relationship with God was made obvious to him and to the disciples that were with him. His face was changed and his clothes appeared dazzling white. We call this story the Transfiguration of Christ.

Our experience of worship can be like a mini-Transfiguration. We trudge our way up towards a sanctuary in hopes of breathing in some good, heavenly air. We hope that we can hear some word of truth or encouragement that gives our everyday lives some perspective. Although we do not change in every appearance, our faces do reflect a bit more peace, hope, joy or love when we have been in a place where we can celebrate a close relationship with God.

Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Jesus can be many different things to different people. Some consider him to be the Son of the living God, others just a kind man who was a good teacher. Some view Jesus as the powerful God who makes a huge difference; others only see him as a man that only fools would follow. Jesus asked Peter, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter replied, "You are the Messiah the Son of the living God."

I believe Jesus wants to know from each of us the same question: Who do you say that I am? Perhaps we would have a different answer at different times in our lives. I am certain the more we spend time developing that relationship with Jesus, the more we can enjoy him as our Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.' John 6.35
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.' John 8:12
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me. John 10.14

MEDITATION - From the Desk of David TenBrook

In response to the detonation of the first nuclear explosion in 1945, American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer later recalled that a quote from the Bhagavad Gita came to his mind:

Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds. (his own translation of 11:32)

This is in reference to a story where the Lord Vishnu persuaded Prince Arjuna to continue fighting despite friends, family, and teachers being arrayed against him. Vishnu's words and many-armed incarnation are examples of power quite common to religion. Indeed, Oppenheimer also named the New Mexican test site Trinity. Scholars generally disagree with Oppenheimer's translation of the Gita verse, but it has become a famous fixture in American culture and so it has stuck.

The God we know from the Gospels is of a different story and so if we were to quote God, the quote might instead read something like "Now I am become life, the creator of worlds." For this is precisely what God did. God created the world. God became human. Jesus became a wandering prophet. Jesus became death, saver of worlds. Jesus became life, redeemer of all.

We are become Christ, servants of worlds.
David

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Louis Smedes, in his book, "Shame and Grace," talks about ways in which Christians paralyze themselves. He contends there is a big difference between shame and guilt. We feel guilty if we have done something that we know we shouldn't or have neglected, whereas shame is a chronic condition often not just tied to a specific omission or commission. Guilt often has a focus on only one screw-up. Shame has to do with a sense of lack of value. Shame is crippling. Shame gets us stuck where we lose energy and motivation.

God loves to not only forgive us but also remove the unhealthy guilt and completely remove our paralyzing shame. If we then put ourselves into the story of Jesus healing the paralyzed man, we then find new freedom and health. That is what God wants for us!

"Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, "Your sins are forgiven", or to say, "Stand up and take your mat and walk?" But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins' - he said to the paralytic - 'I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home." Mark 2: 9-11

Peace and Grace and Healing,
Shel
