MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

David Lows captures in one sentence the Incarnation of God in Jesus. This season is about God entering our world. Jesus comes as an unseen mystery and as something very real and visible. This God brings us great gifts:

God through Jesus is simultaneously hidden and revealed, absent and present, is the one who holds us when we fall, supports us when we falter, and gives us faith when we can not believe on our own.
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. {10} He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. {11} He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. {12} But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, {13} who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. {14} And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. (John 1:9-14 NRSV)

May your Advent and Christmas season be FILLED with wonderful Blessings!

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Perhaps you have seen the Christmas version of 1 Corinthians 13 that has been around the internet. It helps to put the season into perspective:

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I'm just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, Attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir's cantata, but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug the child.
Love sets aside decorating to kiss the husband.
Love is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn't envy another's home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.
Love doesn't yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.
Love doesn't give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can't.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.
Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust.
But giving the gift of love will endure.

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Do you experience worship as Robert Webber describes in his book, Worship is a Verb?

"When I move into the sanctuary and prepare to worship, I enter into a time of rest, a time of relationship, a time to celebrate the truths that give direction to my life. My whole body, soul, and spirit become engaged in rehearsing the work of Christ, which gives shape and form to my life. It is the source of my values, the energy that holds my family together, and the purpose of my work. Worship connects me with the past, gives meaning to the present, and inspires hope for the future as my soul and spirit become blended again into the drama of Christ's life, death, and resurrection."
"I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD!" Psalm 122:1

May your Advent be FILLED with wonderful expectations,

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Every year “Christ the King” Sunday comes near Thanksgiving. I believe they go together. Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday in the Liturgical story. Advent is the beginning waiting for the Messiah. The last Sunday says Christ is victorious. Our future is fantastic. No more pain; no more sorrow. Our God reigns! Our future is fabulous because of what God did for us from Advent to Pentecost. Now there is something to REALLY be thankful for!

“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:57-58 NRSV)
“To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17 NRSV)

May your Thanksgiving be FILLED with Blessings,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

We often have different reasons and needs for attending Worship services. Perhaps Robert Webber captures why you make the time for Sunday morning worship:

“I come to worship with my burdens and needs. My life during the previous week has been rushed and hectic. I have done things that I should not have done, and I have left undone other things that I should have done. I need time to lay my burdens at the feet of Jesus. I need to be still and know that God is God. I need to hear him say, ‘You are forgiven…You are my child… I love you.’”
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God--what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2 NRSV)

Grace and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Over the years the famous prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi has ministered to many people. I am aware of several folks who say it over and over as part of their devotional time. I invite you to stop what you are doing and slowly pray this prayer in your head and in your heart.

Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.

Now pray it one more time.

Grace and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

This Sunday we will be celebrating Communion of the Saints. In his book, “Worship is a Verb,” Robert E. Webber says:

“We need to come to the Table of the Lord with a sense of anticipation, believing that the Lord will meet us there in a unique way, that he will heal our hurts, bind up our wounds, and minister to our needs.” Then he quotes an elderly woman who is asked, “Alma, does Communion mean more to you as you grow older?” She answered, “Oh, yes, far more. Communion has a way of penetrating to the very depth of me. It goes deep, deep down inside me. And it stays with me and reminds me of the love of God.”
“Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.” (Luke 22:19-20 NRSV)

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Kennon L. Callahon says:

“Living is giving. We want our lives to count. We want to make a difference. We do not want to spend and waste our lives in flimsy, foolish ways. We want the confidence that we are living for a cause that counts. Our lives count best when we direct them to the mission of God. We are called to serve not survive.”

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” (1 Peter 4:10)

“For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)

"No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. (Matthew 6:24)

Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Are you afraid of solitude? Ray Campton, our speaker at Westminster Woods last weekend, challenged us to be still for at least five minutes. How do you do sitting in a quiet room with no books, no newspaper, no music, no TV, no computer just you and your Lord? Can you let your mind be still and not fill it up with tasks to be done or worries circulating in your mind? Giving our undivided attention to our God requires work and discipline but the blessings are rich!

Ray also introduced us to Nan Merrill’s book “Psalms For Praying.” She paraphrases Psalm 46:1, 10-11:

“The Beloved is our refuge and strength, a loving presence in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains should shake in the heart of the sea… Be still and know that I am Love. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth! The one who knows all hearts is with us; the Beloved is our refuge and our strength.”

Did you see the front page of the Contra Costa Times today? No matter what happens in our lives or our earth. God is our solid foundation and strength.

May you sense Christ’s grace and peace in abundance,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

World Communion occurs this Sunday. Christians all over the planet are eating bread and drinking the juice of the vine. Communion embodies our Christian faith story. As Robert Webber says: “It is the story of God’s involvement in the history of our world to rescue it, recover it, restore it. This true story is the hope of the world. This story is the substance of Christian worship.” I hope you can so involve yourself in this sacred story that your soul is deeply nourished.

“For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." (1 Corinthians 11:23-25 NRSV)

Being fed by Christ together in love,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

This Sunday my message is dealing with what the Bible has to say about our attitudes. How do you think God wants us to approach the way we live our lives? A few quotes I found:

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” ~ Winston Churchill

“If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it. ~ Mary Engelbreit

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” ~ Herm Albright, quoted in Reader's Digest, June 1995

“Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching?” ~ Dennis and Wendy Mannering

And Scripture says:

“Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” (1 Peter 4:9-10 NRSV)

“Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:13-14 NRSV)

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Those of us working on the Worship Grant task force have been reading “Worship is a Verb” by Robert Webber. He challenges all of us with the phrase: “Worship is not a noun, it is a verb. And worship is not about me, it is about God’s mighty deeds of salvation, those deeds by which God reclaims the whole world for his eternal glory.”

Sometimes we forget when we worship that we are not the audience; we are a participating congregation. When we focus on our Loving Lord, God is pleased and we experience greater fulfillment.

“Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.“ (Psalms 100:2-3 NRSV)
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1 NRSV)

Worshiping Christ together in love,
Shel

MEDITATION From Shel White

During my Sabbatical I enjoyed reading William C. Martin. In his book, “The Art of Pastoring,” he shares good wisdom for all of us ministers (whether clergy or not):

Seeking to look attractive creates blindness.
Seeking to sound impressive creates deafness.
Seeking to please all creates tastelessness.
Seeking to control creates thoughtlessness.
Seeking to protect dreams creates heartlessness.
“But seek first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Mat 6:33)

Serving Christ together in love,
Shel

MEDITATION From Gail Doering

Meditation on the Preaching Text, Hebrews 11:29-12:2

And presently the sky is changed; O world!
What pictures and what harmonies are thine!
The clouds are rich and dark, the air serene,
So like the soul of me, what if't were me?
A melancholy better than all mirth.
Comes the sweet sadness at the retrospect,
Or at the foresight of obscurer years?
Like yon slow-sailing cloudy promontory
Whereon the purple iris dwells in beauty
Superior to all its gaudy skirts.
And, that no day of life may lack romance,
The spiritual stars rise nightly, shedding down
A private beam into each several heart.
Daily the bending skies solicit man,
The seasons chariot him from this exile,
The rainbow hours bedeck his glowing chair,
The storm-winds urge the heavy weeks along,
Suns haste to set, that so remoter lights
Beckon the wanderer to his vaster home.
(from the Adirondacs by Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Why does Paul choose to use clouds as the image for the witnesses, the communion of saints, that have modeled the faith down thru the ages....Adam, Abraham, Moses, Dinah, David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, then the 12 Disciples, Lydia, Paul all the way to the 21st century and folks like Oscar Romero, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Jr., Dorothy Day and those examples of faith that only you know? I suggest you take 20 minutes from your Saturday and read the scripture, this poem, and see if you can find a cloud in the sky on which to gaze and pray and wonder.

Peace and grace,
Gail

MEDITATION From Bill Nebo

I suppose just about everyone who has grown up with some kind of Christian orientation knows the story of the Good Samaritan. In fact many who have been a part of Christianity know this story as well. It is one of the most important of the parables of Jesus because it defines his message as unique from those delivered by most other religious folk in his time and place. And it sets out one of the most important and difficult of directions about how to live a Christian life.

The direction the story gives is simple. Consider everyone your neighbor, whether or not other groups of people with whom you identify consider that person an enemy. Jesus says it clearly when he says,

“You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?” (Matthew 5:44-47).

I find this the most challenging of all the Christian principles of behavior. Jesus doesn’t hedge his words. What he means is quite clear and I find no escape from its inexorable call to everlasting self-vigilance against hatreds. To follow this commandment means I need to meditate regularly upon the complexities of the lives of others and the intricate and profound ways our paths in life intersect and often conflict with one another. It challenges me to see the redeemable in those whose political views I cannot stand, those who don’t like me for no good cause, and those who seek to take from me my money and or my life.

I am trying to get a better handle on how I can be grounded enough grow in my ability to fulfill this challenging direction from Jesus. Want to join me in this effort?

Blessings,
Bill

MEDITATION From Diane Ford

A Thinking-Person’s Faith: What do we Expect from God?

Scripture:

Numbers 22 [Balaam, his Donkey, and the Angel of the Lord]; Luke 24:13-35 [The Road to Emmaus]; Hebrews 13:2 [Entertaining Angels].

What these scriptures have in common is the “invisible” presence of God. Last Sunday and again this Sunday, July 29, we entered a prayer given to us by St. Ignatius of Loyola. The prayer is called, “Prayer of Examen.” For this prayer one chooses a period of time (perhaps the past 24 hours, or the past 7 days, or the past month or year). Then reflect on that time period, asking two questions. Question #1, “When was God most evident to me?” Question #2, “When was God least evident to me?” Another way of approaching this is to ask, “When was I full of life?” and “When did I feel depleted?” These questions communicate assumptions Ignatius took on faith, which we too can trust: God may seem far away, but indeed is always near us. And when we are living more fully in the reality of God in our lives, we experience a quality of “fullness” other words to express it may be that we feel peaceful, joyful, calm, excited, energized, feeling-like-anything-is-possible, and certainly grateful.

Recognizing God in our lives brings a power with it that cannot be duplicated. What expectations do you have regarding God’s presence? If God were breaking bread with you or walking beside you or blocking your path… what would that look like? Would you recognize the Holy Presence? What you expect from God will largely guide how you experience God.

Prayer

God Beyond our Words, yet revealed to us in your Word, Jesus: what do you want me to notice today? [Pause to listen for God.] What have you to teach me? How can I deepen my awareness of you? [Pause to listen.] Holy Spirit, use me as your vessel, bringing comfort and reconciliation, bringing justice and hope. [Pray for people you will come in contact with today.] Amen.

Recommended book from St. Andrew’s Library

For a helpful synopsis of the philosophical, theological, scientific and psychological influences that have helped shape western expectations of God, I highly recommend reading Encounter with God,” by Morton Kelsey (Bethany Fellowship, Inc., 1972). Even though published in 1972 this can help those of us who struggle with a Christian faith in today’s world.

Blessings,
Diane

MEDITATION From Gail Doering

We are standing on holy ground...

"The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language-parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - to help them become more fully aware of the mystery of God's presence in their lives." This Sunday you have the opportunity to experience this multi-sensory, multi-modal approach to religious education. We (Diane, Jennifer and Gail) have designed the worship service around the Creation story. Both services will be the same this week. The whole church family will be in worship the whole time. We pray that all of you will come with curiosity, imagination and a genuine desire to learn and to meet God in a new way of worship.

Rebecca Nye, a practitioner of Godly Play in the UK, says "In most religious education children (and sometimes adults) are told who God is. In 'Godly Play' children discover who God is."

Come on Sunday to discover that everything in God's creation is charged with the possibility of holiness, including each of us, and that we are in relationship with everything in Creation. There is no sacred vs. profane; all ground is holy ground.

The Lord be with you,
Diane, Gail and Jennifer

July 15, 2007

MEDITATION From Diane Ford

NOW WHAT DO I DO?

Scripture: John 5:1-9; Job (the whole story); Ecclesiastes 3:1-8; I King 9.

Guiding Thoughts:

The lame man in John 5 had been in the same sad situation for 38 years! Talk about being stuck in a rut. The story of Job [found in the Old Testament book of Job] and the writings in Ecclesiastes look at the painful aspects of being human, and attempt to come to terms with it. They go about it differently and come up with different words of wisdom, but both do conclude that God is faithful and life is mysterious.

The famous third chapter of Ecclesiastes proclaims, “There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven… A time for planting, a time for uprooting… a time for tears, a time for laughter… a time for keeping silent, a time for speaking.” Hmm, what time is it for you, now? That is the tricky part: discerning if it is time to push through to finish a project or take a nap; time to take a bold stand, or time to wait and watch. These types of decisions are required of us every day some big, some small. Often when we think we are making the best decision, we are actually allowing Fear to be in charge. It is Fear that keeps us stuck in ruts or trapped in our “comfort-zones.’ Remaining in our comfort-zones can lead us to stagnation. It can also lead us into prolonged pain.

When life throws us curve-balls, let us be ready to name what it is we most fear and then be ready to choose a course that seems the most wise, in spite of Fear and this will not necessarily be the most comfortable. As you pray for your own challenges or that of a friend, try meditating on the story of the Prophet Elijah in I Kings 9. He was very afraid of Jezebel and ran for his life into a desert and then into a cave. Fear was in charge; yet God came, repeatedly, to give direction.

Prayer:
Give me wisdom to face my days, Loving God. Give me eyes to recognize Fear and a voice to speak directly to it. Fear is not my Lord you are! Giver of Life, it is you who I want to listen to and follow. Open my ears to hear your song. Open my heart to the freedom and courage you have for me, even amidst great challenges or pain. Amen.

MEDITATION From Gail Doering

Freedom is a word that has always puzzled me. What does it mean, really? It seems to me that in our day and world many who are claiming a right to freedom are doing so while impinging upon the rights and freedoms of others. I also hear freedom used in conjunction with the idea and ideal that we are free, therefore we are secure and free from troubles, travails and threats. This never feels like the kind of freedom and life that the Gospel affirms. Instead, I read in Paul's letter to the Galations a freedom to be people of faith and love and hope - Christians! All of this through the power and grace of the Holy Spirit.

“For freedom Christ frees us!”

Peace and grace,
Gail

MEDITATION - From Diane Ford

An E-mail from the Apostle Paul:

From: Paul and Timothy
To: The Church of God in Corinth
Cc: God's people in the whole of Achaia
Subject: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Many of us go to our computers every day, or even multiple times during the day to read e-mails and respond to them. If we miss a day, then we have twice the amount the next day. I encourage you to catch up on your emails this week. Specifically, emails from the Apostle Paul. Okay, they weren't emails originally, but they would have been if he had had the technology! Of the many letters attributed to Paul, biblical scholars have concluded that seven of them are authentically from Paul. So, for the sake of simplicity, let's limit ourselves to those seven. What I call the "email" is actually the opening verses of each of the seven letters, listed here for you.

Rom. 1:1-7
I Corinthians 1:1-9 (10-11)
II Corinthians 1:1-7
Galatians 1:1-10
Philippians 1:1-2
I Thessalonians 1:1-5 (6-10)
Philemon 1:1-7

Before reading, take a deep breath and acknowledge God's presence “ the Word “ with you. Quickly read these verses the way you'd read through your emails – be sure to use your fingers or other bookmarks so you can flip from one "email" to the other quickly. After you've read them, flip back through them to read them again, and at least one more time after that. What do you notice? What impression do you get of the author's feelings in these emails? I encourage you to do this every day this week – perhaps just before you open your actual emails. You may find it more illuminating to do this with other letters (those traditionally attributed to Paul) in the New Testament – Eph 1-2, 15-19 (-23); Colossians 1:1-12; II Thessalonians 1:1-5; I Tim. 1:1-7; II Tim. 1:1-5; Titus 1:1-4.

Prayer: Holy One of grace and peace, reveal to me your truth as I study these scriptures. What do you have for me today? I'm listening. I open myself to your power, your compassion, your action, your healing. Infuse me with your presence that I may be more fully what you will me to be. I pray for others who are praying this prayer this week. Build us into your holy people – the kind of people that Apostle Paul would be excited about. Amen.

This meditation is offered by Diane Ford, the summer Pastoral Intern. If you would like to respond or share how this study went for you, email Diane at df2163@columbia.edu.

Peace and grace,
Diane

  • What is Godly Play? ~ On Sunday, June 24th, I will be giving a short Godly Play storytelling demonstration between services in Room 1. There will be opportunities for introductory "training" for prospective storytellers and doorpersons, the dates of which will be known at the time of the demo. MEDITATION - From Gail Doering

Ah, you who make iniquitous decrees, who write oppressive statutes, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be your spoil, and that you may make the orphans your prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, in the calamity that will come from far away? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth, so as not to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain? For all this [God's] anger has not turned away; [God's] hand is stretched out still. - Isaiah 10:1-4
If I cannot listen to all of life, then any part that I do hear will be only partial or distorted. If I am listening only in chapel, if I am listening only to my peers, if I am listening only to my profession, if I am listening only to my routine, then I have cut out the poor, the children, the needy, the holy where it is calling me to be present.

- Joan Chittister from Alive Now! July/August 1994

Who's voice will we heed? To what will we choose to listen? From whence does our help and come?

Peace and grace,
Gail

MEDITATION - From Gail Doering

First read John 6:1-14, the passage we will encounter in this Sunday's worships service, and then read this poem and meditate upon the two. What might you have to offer a hungry world?

Loaves and Fishes

This is not the age of information.
This is not
the age of information.

Forget the news,
and the radio,
and the blurred screen.

This is the time of loaves
and fishes.

People are hungry,
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.

--David Whyte

Peace and grace,
Gail

MEDITATION – From Kim James

What does it mean for something to have "value?" Does it have to have a monetary attachment to it to be "worthwhile?" Does it have to be something we find "useful?" What of those things that provide us with something that cannot be measured in terms that the world uses? What "value" does the smile and laughter of a child have? How "worthwhile" is a knowing look from a best friend? How "useful" is music? God gave us smiles and laughter, companions and confidants, music and singing; what measure do you weigh these things with, a worldly one or a heavenly one?

Kim

“Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!” (Luke 12:24 NRSV)

“More than that, I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8 NRSV)

MEDITATION – From the Desk of Shel White

For the last several days, my personal meditation time has focused on two quotes from My Grandfather’s Blessings by Rachel Naomi Remen. She quoted (on page 168) a woman with cancer:

“There are only two kinds of people in this world – those who are alive and those who are afraid.” And she quotes Roberto Assagioli: “There is no certainty; there is only adventure.”

It is important for us to face our fears. When we sit with our fears with our loving Lord, we can find valuable healing and peace.

In the New Testament we find “Do not be afraid.” 18 times. Here are two places:

“And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:30-31 NRSV)
“ ….He placed his right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever…” (Revelation 1:17-18 NRSV)

May you experience an extra measure of God’s wonderful Peace,
Shel

Diane will be here all of June and July (she leaves in early August to return to New York for another Masters Degree in Biblical Studies). She will also accompany Pastor Gail on visits and at meetings. She will work two full week days and each Sunday during June and July. This is a serendipitous gift to St. Andrew's as we plan for Shel's sabbatical this summer. (NOTE: Diane does have one significant need. She will be traveling out to the West Coast in a big van or motor home which will not be practical for her commute between Sacramento and Pleasant Hill. If anyone has a 2nd auto or car that needs to be housesat during the summer, please notify Pastor Gail at gail@doerings.org or leave a message on the office phone.)

MEDITATION from the Youth Group

Can we, as imperfect beings, accomplish everything in God’s presence? Obviously, we can’t perform miracles such as walking on water or feeding 5,000 people with a single loaf of bread and two fish. With God’s assistance, though, we can perform miracles of our own. Every life a doctor saves, every bit of knowledge a teacher passes down to their students (and aren’t we all just teachers and students of each other?), and every time a stranger smiles at you while walking down the street and your bad day suddenly isn’t entirely terrible. We can perform these small miracles every day using the gifts God gave us and his guidance through our lives.

In Matthew 19:26, Jesus tells his disciples that

“With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

But isn’t anything and everything within our grasp in God’s light?

Peace and Light,
Jessica Thorne

  • Are You Multilingual? ~ For Pentecost Sunday, May 27th, we are looking for several folks who speak a language other than English who would like to participate in the service. Please contact Shel or the church office to let us know if you are willing and what language you speak.
  • Graduation Time! ~ It’s that time of year again, time to acknowledge and congratulate all those who will be graduating from high school or college. If you have a family member who is graduating, please give us their name and the name of their school to be included in a special June bulletin and the June Network. The deadline is May 15th for the bulletin and Network. You may call the church office at 685-4720 or e-mail the information to JenniferC@pcusa.org.
  • NEW! Katrina Work Group News ~ The Katrina Intergenerational Group is well on its way to the mission work trip in New Orleans, June 16-23. Unfortunately, Misty Thompson, our youth director, is unable to make the trip. So, we have an extra adult spot. Please contact Pastor Gail, Peggy Luna, or Terry Neidlinger is you are interested in being a missionary to New Orleans!
  • St. Andrew’s Thanks John Thomas ~ After much deliberation and prayer, The Personnel Committee and Session has decided to bring in new leadership for our music programs. We are extremely grateful for the talent and inspiration which John Thomas has brought to St. Andrew's and our parting brings all of us much sadness. John will be working with us through June 3rd, Music Ministry Sunday. Sharon Cuthbertson has graciously agreed to step in for the interim until the position of Music Director can be filled. We invite everyone to a goodbye celebration after both services on June 3rd.
  • Welcome our Pastoral Intern! ~ Please join me in welcoming our pastoral intern, Diane Ford. Diane comes to us from New York via Sacramento. She was longtime Director of Worship and Music at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento. She has just graduated with her Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in New York. She has been working at a church in New York, but her Presbytery has recommended that she "diversify" and have some additional ministry experience in a church where she is not known for her many musical gifts. St. Andrew's fit the bill on several counts, including the fact that Pastor Gail has previously supervised interns, there are a broad range of ministries to witness and experience, and Diane's parents live right down the street in Chateau III! Diane will be here all of June and July (she leaves in early August to return to New York for another Masters Degree in Biblical Studies). She will lead in worship, preach several times, do some pastoral calling, and work on some curriculum writing for officer training and children's ministry.

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Can we have peace without justice? In the book Missional Church: A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North American, edited by Darrell L. Gruder, Arthur Holmes summarized that prophetic vision as shalom.

“He envisions a world characterized by peace, justice, and celebration. Shalom, the overarching vision of the future, means "peace," but not merely peace as the cessation of hostilities. Instead, shalom envisions the full prosperity of a people of God living under the covenant of God's demanding care and compassion are rule. In the prophetic vision, peace such as this comes hand in hand with justice. Without justice, there can be no real peace, and without peace, no real justice. Indeed, only in a social world full of peace grounded in justice can there come the full expression of joy and celebration.” [pp. 90-91]

In John 14:27, Jesus says:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

Then again perhaps one can be sure of God’s real inner peace in the face of injustice?

Peace and Grace and Hope,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

IF I HAD MY CHILD TO RAISE OVER AGAIN

by Diane Loomans

If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd model less about the love of power,
and more about the power of love.

Come to worship this Sunday to remember the ways of children. They will lead in both services.

Peace and grace,
Gail

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Mother Teresa seemed to always get at what is most important in how we live our lives:

“Don’t look for spectacular actions; what is important is the gift of yourselves. It is the degree of love you insert in your deeds.”
“As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:12-14 NRSV)

Serving our Lord together in Love,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

The Stone
Rabbi Zoë Klein

As we know,
It is customary for Jews to place a stone by the graveside
of one they love.
Some say this is just a marker to commemorate the visit.
Some say that it is to weigh down the spirits of grief that haunt us,
anchoring our pain, so that one does not dismiss his destiny
and walk the path of a mourner forever.

I first heard this shared at a September 11, 2001 remembrance worship and I was mesmerized by the importance of the stone in Jewish burial traditions, and how the stone has significance for Christians as well. I think the stone can remind us of all of the above, and then remind us that we no longer have to be marked by the stone or weighed down by the grief, but can be released from the tomb of death and despair to the newness of life. We are Easter people!

He is Risen, still!
Gail

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Eucharisto, in Greek means "to give thanks" in Greek. It is the basis for our word "eucharistic," another word for the Lord’s Supper: "Jesus gave thanks, and took bread and broke it." I have been asked why we celebrate communion on Easter. Easter is a season for us to give great expressions of appreciation to God for smashing the ultimate enemy death! We come to the table because we are so grateful. I pray this Sunday your mind, heart and soul are all filled with deep appreciation. When this occurs from deep inside we are able to say: Hallelujah!!

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26 NRSV)
With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. (Acts 4:33 NRSV)

May you enjoy Many Easter Blessings,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

This Sunday we thank Jesus for choosing to go into Jerusalem. What an awful week ahead for him. It starts out triumphant and goes downhill from there. How do you face difficult days and difficult weeks? Jesus did not go alone. In the places of deepest pain and rejection, he spent time alone with his heavenly Father. The same loving God is available for us. All the humans in his life left him alone. Even in the most difficult of days, God gives us the strength to serve and follow our Lord just as Jesus did. But we do not have to go it alone.

“Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor” (John 12:23-26)

Blessings on the Road to Resurrection,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Meister Eckhart captures a vital process in our spiritual growth.

“The soul must long for God in order to be set aflame by God’s love; but if the soul cannot yet feel this longing, then it must long for the longing. To long for the longing is also from God.”

Are you aware of your hunger for God? Often we try to feed ourselves on healthy and unhealthy activities in order to fill that place that is intended for God.

"Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.” (Luke 6:21 NRSV)
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’” (John 6:35 NRSV)

  • Katrina Bound! ~ We are continuing to make plans for our Intergenerational and Youth Mission experience to New Orleans on June 17-23. We have received exciting updates from the School of Urban Missions: the deadline to do clean out and mud out of homes has been accelerated to the end of March. Therefore, it is most likely that our group will be doing new construction as opposed to demolition and clean up. We are certain this will add to the "positive" attitude and outlook of the ministry. What can you as a congregation do? Please pray for us and consider how you can contribute to our work efforts. This is a costly trip but we believe it is such a worthwhile and meaningful ministry. Everyone we've talked to who has done one of these trips has described it as life-changing and faith-transforming as well as wonderful work. Watch bulletin and e-notes for upcoming fundraisers and also consider creative ways you might donate. Any questions can be directed to Peggy Luna, Terry Neidlinger, Gail Doering or Misty Thompson. MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

The Return of the Prodigal Son by Rembrandt has long been a favorite painting of mine. What do you see in this artwork that more fully expresses the entirety of Luke 15:11-32? I find I could look for a long time just at the hands. They are so gentle, and at the same time firmly planted on the back of the son. Be guided by what you see...

Blessings on the Road to Resurrection,
Gail

  • UPDATE: Katrina Bound! - The Mission Work Trip Committee has decided to spend a week working in the area where hurricanes Katrina and Rita did so much damage. ; We'll be going June 16-23, 2007. This will be an intergenerational trip in that all ages will be going the same week. The youth will be together at a work site and will have their own group times. Find out more info: Terry Neidlinger (671-0303) or Peggy Luna (827-2682). UPDATE: We have located the best airfare and rental vehicle rates currently available for large groups and have arrived at a per person cost of approximately $650 for the 7-day trip to serve the people of New Orleans. Both the youth and intergenerational groups will be doing fund raising, so we are working to make that amount considerably less in terms of out of pocket costs. We must know by March 21st of your sincere interest to attend this trip. In order to express this interest we will need a $100 non-refundable deposit at that time. We know this is a significant amount of money, but we also are full of faith and believe that God is leading us to this amazing ministry. Please pray about how you can be involved!
  • “Dinner with Friends” is an informal fun way to enjoy food and fellowship with 6 to 8 other people. You commit to four or five pot-luck meals meeting at one another’s home s. It is a great way to make new friends in the church or deepen already established relationships. This program works great for single s and couples. MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Most of us need reassurances from time-to-time. We often look to people around us to let us know we are valuable. I believe the greatest reassurances come when we are silent with our loving Lord.

Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D. in her book “My Grandfather’s Blessings” says,

“Perhaps the most important thing we bring to another person is the silence in us. Not the sort of silence that is filled with unspoken criticism or hard withdrawal. The sort of silence that is a place of refuge, of rest, of acceptance of someone as they are. We are all hungry for this other silence. It is hard to find. In its presence we can remember something beyond the moment, a strength on which to build a life. Silence is a place of great power and healing. Silence is God’s lap.”
“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall never be shaken.” Psalms 62:1-2 NRSV
"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth." Psalms 46:10 NRSV

Blessings on the Road to Resurrection,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

Lenten Steps

In Lent we follow Christ, one step at a time,
one foot in front of the other,
by little acts of
self-denial.
Fast from judging others; Feast on Christ dwelling in them.
Fast from fear of illness; Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words that pollute; Feast on speech that purifies.
Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; Feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism.
Fast from negatives; Feast on alternatives.
Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; Feast on compassion.
Fast from suspicion; Feast on truth.
Fast from gossip; Feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from worry; Feast on faith.

Words to guide you on the Road to Resurrection,
Gail

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

Lent Prayer

yesterday,
i stuffed myself
on pancakes and pleasure,
on chocolate and self-indulgence;
now,
empty me
of all those delicious desires
which make my life (and soul)
so heavy;

yesterday,
i put on that funny face i call 'me'
and danced through the streets
of temptation and selfishness;
now,
draw me
into those quiet places
where you can reshape me
as your child;

yesterday,
i wore a costume
bejeweled with pride's glitter,
and rainbowed with my silly sins;
now,
clothe me
in prayer
and smudge my face
with your heart's tears;

yesterday,
i chased after the world
into death;
now,
lead me into life
this Lent.

(c) 2007 Thom M. Shuman

Psalm 51:16-17 - For Thou dost not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; Thou art not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise.

Words to live by,
Gail

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Most of the time, most of us connect with God by using just the left side of our brain. Certainly our rational thinking is a vital way to experience God, but it is incomplete. As we worship this Transfiguration Sunday, a section of my sermon will be doing what Christians have done for centuries. We will view some of the world’s greatest art depicting the Transfiguration of Jesus. Sharon will play some of the great church music while we let more of our senses pull us into worship. Art work on canvas and wood and glass over the years along with music has provided a connection to God which words fail to express.

He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." (Luke 10:27 NRSV)

Making room for God,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

God's calling words are not always comfortable to us. We stand in good company -- Moses, Esther, Ezekiel, Daniel, David, Jesus' disciples, Jeremiah, and yes, even Isaiah -- all were uncertain and had some sense of inadequacy when faced with the realization that they were being asked to proclaim the Living God, the Holy One, to their communities. In some cases they were certain that their message would not be received well, if it was heard at all. However, we also have account after account that give testament to the fact that God does indeed equip the called, rather than call the equipped. Nonetheless, when we say to God, ourselves and others "Here I am, Lord! Send me!" we can hear them as "scary words."

Come to church this Sunday and explore your call and know that you are not alone!

Making room for God,
Gail

KEY UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • On Sunday, February 11th, please join the Kid's Kingdom kids in supporting Heifer International. The children, as part of their January mission project, have learned about Heifer, made posters and coin collection containers, and selected the animal they would like to gift. They evaluated all the animal options (including goats, chicks, water buffalos, bees, etc) and selected chicks. Heifer's mission is to work with communities around the world to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. You'll be amazed at the difference charitable giving and a simple animal gift can make in the life of a struggling family. Help children and families around the world receive training and animal gifts that help them become self-reliant. Between services THIS SUNDAY, please see the children holding collection containers in the shape of animals. We would appreciate your loose change to help make a difference in the lives of a community. Please help Kid's Kingdom send the gift of chicks!

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

How close do you want God to be? Sometimes we wonder where God is and long for our Lord’s peace and hope and direction. Then also, if we are honest, we sometimes want distance from our Creator. We like to be our own god sometimes. Other times we are not proud of what we have or have not accomplished in our lives. We then want to move from God’s bright light. God wants to invade us with undeserved grace and acceptance just what we need no matter how we feel about ourselves.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God -- not the result of works, so that no one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NRSV)

Growing together in our faith,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Scott Cowdell of St Barnabas’ Theological College contends:

“If we’re to grow up, we have to face some unpleasant facts. The birth of a baby brother or sister teaches us that we’re not the centre of the world; the bruises and scrapes of the playground and sports field teach us the costs of belonging to a community; and the death of beloved cats and dogs teaches us that we live in a world of impermanence and suffering. If we fail to learn these lessons, and many others we could name, then we will not become adults who live maturely in the world and with other people.”

Cowdell goes on to tell us that the same is true of our faith. “We have to grow up into mature Christians—to become adult children of God.” How mature is your faith? Is it strong enough to face the disappointments and heartaches of life? The faith we got as a child will not be enough to face the challenge of the adult world.

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:11-13 NRSV)

Growing together in our faith,
Shel

MEDITATION From the Desk of Gail Doering

Lesslie Newbigin says “I think the great difficulty about the invisible church is that one always chooses the members oneself. The invisible church is a kind of extension of the ego. The very essence of the church is that it is a visible body, and it is one body.” Newbigin was a missionary, theologian, and some have even termed him a postmodern missiologist. His words give us pause and reason to think seriously about the business of church and what sort of “body image” we are projecting. When reading his words and pondering his thoughts on the church, secularism and our role in the world, we recognize we do have some “body building” to do!

He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God ... (Eph. 4:11-13)

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

This Sunday, we get to enjoy a message from Rev Bill Nebo. He will be preaching from the book of Acts about Simon the Magician who wanted to purchase from Peter the power to heal. Bill will be pointing out that Simon discovered that not only was this power not for sale, but it was unobtainable by those who desired it. Bill will deal with this sorting of desires that can bring to a human life the gift of God's ultimate power or the disappointment of losing its source.

It is good for us to ponder: what are the desires of our hearts and what is it that God desires for us?

“O LORD, you will hear the desire of the meek; you will strengthen their heart, you will incline your ear to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that those from earth may strike terror no more.´ (Psalms 10:17-18 NRSV)
“You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.” (Psalms 51:6 NRSV)

May you experience MANY blessings in 2007!

  • Is the End of the World Coming Soon? Many people, including some prominent ones, have predicted the coming end of the world. So far they have all been wrong but does that mean it will not happen one day -- perhaps soon? What do the Bible, Science, and our popular culture say about the possible end of the earth and what all of this might mean? We will inquire into these matters on Wednesdays January 24, 31, February 7, 14. [That is, if we are all still here then.] The class is scheduled from 7:30 until 9:00. Please come.

MEDITATION From the Desk of Shel White

Soren Kierkegaard says it well: “Now, with God’s help, I shall become myself.” What if this year we could become more authentically ourselves? It sounds scary. The process requires the right amount of self-esteem. Overabundance of self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence gets in the way of truly becoming ourselves. When we realize how our very true selves is what God loves the most about us, getting the proper balance becomes easier.

“I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.” (Ephesians 3:16-17 NRSV)
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:13-14 NRSV)

May you experience MANY blessings in 2007!
