MEDITATION - From the Desk of Rev. Wendy Komori Stager

"Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight. Wish I may, wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight." "Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are."

My 2 year old daughter is full of fascination with the moon and the stars. She hears about them in nursery rhymes and tries to sing about them in her off-key way. When it is dark outside, she looks skyward and points out all the stars to me. Her wonder and awe of these points of light remind me to slow down and appreciate the nighttime sky.

The Magi followed a star to find the baby Jesus. May each star that we see remind us to seek Christ in our world today.

Wendy

    • January 11, 2009 First Sunday of Epiphany 9:00am Contemporary & 10:30am Traditional Preacher: Shel White "Jesus' Baptism and ours"
  • Parents and Tots Parents with toddlers are invited to play and fellowship in our heated toddler room at the church on Friday mornings from 9:30am to 10:45am. Grandparents and siblings are welcome as well. We also have a group that meets on Sundays, with our next meeting on Sunday, January 11 at 3pm.
  • Adult Education Opportunity Rev. Bill Nebo will be teaching a seminar entitled: "The Gospel of Judas". It will be based on Elaine Pagels' book that analyzes the recently revealed Gospel of Judas. The seminar will meet January 4, 11, and 18 at 9am. Among the writings called Gnostic Gospels is the Gospel of Judas. This ancient Christian writing gives us a totally different characterization of the disciple Judas. It portrays him as an intimate of Jesus, one to whom Jesus revealed deep secrets of the kingdom. It also claims that Judas was acting on the directions of Jesus when he helped engineer Jesus' arrest. The story the gospel tells reveals a great deal about the issues and thinking of the early Christian community. It is this thinking that helps us add depth to study of the four canonized gospels and our own modern thinking about questions of life raised by our faith. We hope you will join us.
  • Confirmation Class begins in January All 9th to 12th graders and their parents are invited to "Confirmation, Information and Preparation" at noon on Sunday, January 11. You will meet the teachers for Confirmation Class and learn about topics we'll be covering. Confirmation classes will be held starting Sunday, January 25 from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. We will finish in May. Please contact Rev. Wendy to receive an invitation letter and schedule.
  • The Sandwich Generation: Families stuck between caring for children and aging parents. Workshop: Sunday, January 11, 2009 from 3-5pm at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. If you are responding to the call for help from aging parents or just worried about their well being at the same time as caring for children you are one of over 10 million people dealing with this life "stressing" period. This lecture/workshop will give you some tools to find balance and sanity in what seems like a crazy period. Beth Witrogen McLeod will talk about the real emotional journey and ways to find peace and wisdom without losing the self. Linda Johnson will talk about "sharing the care" options and resources that families can use in order to find balance and quality care for elders and themselves. We will have lots of time for your individual questions. Beth will bring some of her books for those wishing to purchase them. There is no fee for this lecture.
  • Annual Congregational Meeting Join us for our annual meeting and potluck lunch following the second service on Sunday, January 25. Come hear the latest on the Building Project and our ongoing experience in worship thanks to the Worship Renewal Grant, and hear and ask questions about the health of St. Andrew's, and see a fun review of 2008 in pictures! The Nominating Committee is pleased to place in nomination for Elders the following: Sharon Eklund, Bill Cameron, and Barbara Stanton; and for Deacons: Opal Branscum, Carol McMains, Lance Warren, Judy and Henry Noffsinger, and Marjorie McWee. Please sign-up to bring a main course, salad or dessert in Crothers Hall.
  • Westminster Woods Women's Retreat Each year Westminster Woods Camp and Conference Center in Occidental, CA hosts a women's retreat (January 30 - February 1). The music is uplifting and the food is wonderful (It's not your typical "camp" food!). This year, the theme is Fruit of the Spirit. Rev. Lydia Richards will share her insights and stories to bring change to our thinking, and light to our lives! Register online and get more information at www.westminsterwoods.org. MEDITATION - From the Desk of David TenBrook

Blessings and Peace to you,

Merry Christmas Eve! I pray that this time of celebration finds you well! I come with a complexly simple meditation for you. This is a link to a music video on YouTube. The song is called "Handlebars" and it is performed by a band called Flobots. The song itself is the part I want you to pay the most attention to. The music video is excellent (though I will warn you that it gets a bit intense), but if you just listen to the song then you are golden.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning-the first day. - Genesis 1:1-5

Every time we say, "Let there be!" in any form, something happens. - Stella Terrill Mann

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. - Scott Adams

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
David

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Children understand at a deep reality about Christmas that we often miss - mystery. Can there be a deeper manifestation of mystery than the Incarnation? My pastor friend, Geoff Nelson, shared with his congregation this insight from Dietrich Bonhoeffer's "I Want to Live These Days with You" (compiled by Manfred Webber and translated by O.C. Dean, Jr., Westminster John Knox Press, Louisville/London, 2007):

"The lack of mystery in our modern life is our downfall and our poverty. A human life is worth as much as the respect it holds for the mystery. We retain the child in us to the extent that we honor the mystery. Therefore, children have open, wide-awake eyes, because they know that they are surrounded by the mystery. They are not yet finished with this world; they still don't know how to struggle along and avoid the mystery, as we do. We destroy the mystery because we sense that here we reach the boundary of our being, because we want to be lord over everything and have it at our disposal, and that's just what we cannot do with the mystery. Living without mystery means knowing nothing of the mystery in our own life, nothing of the mystery of another person, nothing of the mystery of the world; it means passing over our own hidden qualities and those of others and the world. It means remaining on the surface, taking the world seriously only to the extent that it can be calculated and exploited, and not going beyond the world of calculation and exploitation. Living without mystery means not seeing the crucial processes of life at all and even denying them."

"I want their hearts to be encouraged and united in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding and have the knowledge of God's mystery, that is, Christ himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." (Colossians 2:2-3 NRSV)

May you enjoy the power and mystery of God's blessings this season,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Clarita Wooldridge

As we approach the third week of Advent, we continue to wait in anticipation and reflection, joyfully expecting the birth of Jesus, our Savior. As we wait, we lift our prayers and praise to God. It is a sacred time of waiting for the coming of Jesus.

Advent Prayer by Reverend Henri J.M. Nouwen

Lord Jesus,

Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.

We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day.

We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.

We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.

We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.

We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.

To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"

Amen.

May the quiet and sacred, weave through our heart and life as we await the Radiant light of the world.
Clarita

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Waiting has to be one of the most difficult tasks a human being has to face. We often wait for information. The news could be good or bad. Most of the time, we would rather have the news even if it is traumatic, because even that can be better than being in limbo. Advent is waiting for the Christ - waiting for the gift that will take away all pain and bring the greatest joy.

"There is a time appointed in the history of our world, when that very Jesus who appeared on earth, 'a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief,' shall reappear with all the circumstances of majesty and power, 'King of kings and Lord of lords.' We are led to expect a day when Christ shall find a home in the remotest hearts and families, and the earth in all its circumference be covered with the knowledge and the power of the Lord." - Henry Melvill
"Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!" (Psalms 27:14)
"I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem." (Psalms 130:5-7)

Waiting in the Wonder together,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

Advent is a strange and wonderful time in the life of the worshiping community: strange, because we seem to be holding back when the culture is going wild; wonderful, because we know that a night is coming when we will join together in singing "Gloria in excelcis Deo" and "O Come, All Ye Faithful" with candles blazing everywhere. Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation.

Advent means waiting. There is reason for restraint; if you can't hold back, you can't celebrate. Our culture is geared to instant everything, and "right now" is our demand. Yet the gospel's wisdom is that we do not live according to our timetable. We live by the Lord of time who is coming, but who never seems to be on our time schedule. The baby arrives in its own time - ask any woman who has been pregnant with one. So, we prepare and ready ourselves and count the days for the Messiah to arrive.

Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

The other day I drank a whole bottle of water without putting it down till I finished. It tasted so good. My body seemed to say "thank you." I said out loud, "I did not know I was so thirsty." Our souls can be parched and we can easily ignore those cravings for the living water of God. Or we can try to find substitutes for the living water, but our souls are still thirsty.

"O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your name. My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me." (Psalms 63:1-8 NRSV)

Peace and Grace and Hope,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Clarita Wooldridge

It has been an anxious, emotional and stressful period these past months for many of us as we learned and perhaps experienced effects of the crises in the economy, finances, the housing and job markets and our emotions around the history-making political campaigns and elections.

As we look toward Thanksgiving and Advent, there is time and opportunity to begin gathering together our many reasons for thankfulness in our lives. There is time to unite with the deep peace God and Jesus hold out to us, an indescribable wonderful peace that passes beyond all understanding, restoring and refilling us as we consider all we are thankful for and reflect on preparing ourselves anew for the birth of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Philippians 4:6-7 " Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."

Holy Prince of Peace, we ask that you pour out your peace upon us, from your fountain of all blessings, filling us with peace so we may become channels of your peace as we live and serve in your name. Amen

Grace and Peace,
Clarita

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

We know fear and worry often is very destructive to our peace and happiness. It also causes relationships to deteriorate. Probably the most difficult person you know is the one who is the most afraid. Could that person be you?

Scripture tells us that "perfect love casts out fear" (1 John 4:18). Therefore if we would love the most difficult people we know and not approach them with our own fear - perhaps real healing can begin? What are some concrete ways you can love difficult people rather than avoiding them? What about letting your Lord also help you to love yourself at a deeper level? Think about how much fear and worry might disappear if more of us did this kind of labor for the Lord.

"But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you." (1 Peter 3:14-15 NRSV)

Grace and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

The Psalms often speak directly to today. I like how Nan C. Merrill interprets the first part of Psalm 49.

Hear this, all nations!
Give ear, all inhabitants of the earth.
Why should I give up in times of trouble,
When stubborn fears oppress me,
When illusions surround me,
Fears that can give birth to greed
And lead to exploitation?
Truly I cannot save my self,
Or offer a haven of peace to another,
When my home is like a hornet's nest,
A hive of restless fears.
Turning to you. O Guiding Spirit,
Is my strength and support,
A stronghold in times of trouble.
Yes, even the wise are not immune to fear;
Yet, unlike the ignorant, the wise
Face their fears with resolve.

It is SO easy to let our fears control us and destroy our tranquility. It requires direct connection with our loving Lord to rediscover strength and support.

Grace and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

After World War Two, a group of students from Britain who were committed to reconciliation took a trip to postwar Italy and German. On the trip, the students met Karl Barth, the well known theologian. "What should we do to promote world peace, sir? one student asked. "Go home and put your own house in order," came the reply.

Many of our arguments and conflicts are with the people we are closest to and interact with often such as our friends, family members, neighbors or co-workers. It is human that we become angry with one another. Being angry is not a sin, but holding onto the anger and insisting that we are right and the other person is wrong can never lead to reconciliation.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. James 3:17 -18

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

We know Psalm 46:10, "Be still and know that I am God." Sometimes we say we are just too busy to take the time to be alone and quiet with our God. Sometimes we can even admit that we are just not disciplined enough to take the time to be alone and quiet with our Lord. But perhaps the real issue is we are afraid to be alone with ourselves and God. Perhaps we are avoiding not so much God but a distortion of ourselves we do not want to face. Sadly, we avoid the most healing and affirming and life-giving place we can go.

Sometimes when my mind is so busy with tasks to do, I just get quiet with God and simply do what my mother taught me many years ago. She taught me to just say the first 9 words of the 23rd Psalm emphasizing on word each time I say it and say it slowly nine times:

THE Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.
The LORD is my shepherd I shall not want.
The Lord IS my shepherd I shall not want.
The Lord is MY shepherd I shall not want.
The Lord is my SHEPHERD I shall not want.
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.
The Lord is my shepherd I SHALL not want.
The Lord is my shepherd I shall NOT want.
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not WANT.

Peace and Grace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Clarita Wooldridge

Who doesn't get weary and need rest from the work, worry and pressures of life?

There are so many cares and decisions in our lives and in the world right now and at times we are caught in problems and fears we find hard to escape.

God knows that every one of us needs rest and respite again and again. God tells us in the very beginning of our Bible, in the second Old Testament book, Exodus 33:14:

"My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

What an incredible truth that supports our whole life!

Reading and reflecting on this verse can bring us the very real sense of God present with us and calling us to rest; to rest in God's promise and presence, letting go for awhile, all of our concerns and responsibilities that distance us from this great and wonderful place of being and resting in the Presence of God, resting with no need to concern ourselves about anything in this place with God, simply letting God's rest and love wash over us refreshing and restoring us. In the same way, in the New Testament, Jesus calls to us in Matthew, 11:28-30:

"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest."

Our sacred Scriptures tells us how much God and Jesus love us and the needed rest they hold out for us and that they are waiting to meet us in this great place of Holy Presence, rest, respite and restoration for our whole being. All we need to do is think or say,

I am coming, I will rest awhile with you God and Jesus, I will lay down my burdens, my concerns, my fears and be wholly with you, feeling your presence, receiving your love and letting your deep rest move through me restoring and refreshing me like nothing else can. Thank you for this gift of rest which is so needed in my life. Amen.

Clarita

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Here are some Scriptures that can move from our head to our heart and give us great comfort if we will let them:

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. (Psalms 46:1-3 NRSV)
"Teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20 NRSV)
"The Lord your God.will neither fail you, nor abandon you." Deuteronomy 3:16
"Don't be. sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." Nehemiah 8:10

Now read them again - - - slower.

Peace and Grace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

One of the most basic dreaded human emotions is loneliness. We will do anything to avoid it. Sometimes we face our loneliness in a healthy way - but sometimes we run to our addictions to avoid those feelings. In our quest to move away from isolation, we do not stop and enjoy hanging out with ourselves and our Loving Lord. Making time away from activities and people to be quiet can be the opposite of loneliness.

"The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!" (John 16:32-33 NRSV)

Peace and Grace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Wendy Komori Stager

Forgiveness is hard work. It is clear from scripture that Christ wants us to forgive each other, but we aren't given a lot of instruction about how to do it. I wish it were as simple as "forgive and forget," but in my experience, we can't forget very easily or quickly. In many situations, it is inappropriate to forget a significant harm that has been done to us. However, God helps us in our process of forgiveness. This prayer for St. Francis is one way to turn to God and invite God's spirit into our hearts and to help us as we struggle to forgive.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen

Blessings,
Wendy

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Robert Webber in his book, "Worship is a Verb," says,

"We need to come to the Table of the Lord with a sense of anticipation, believing that the Lord will meet us there in a unique way, that he will heal our hurts, bind up our wounds, and minister to our needs. Communion has a way of penetrating to the very depths of our soul. It reminds us of the love of God."

Come and be fed this Sunday way deep in your soul by feasting on the body and blood of your Loving Lord.

"When he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:24-26)

Grace and Hope and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

My friend Rev Geoff Nelson turned me on Tod Bolsinger's book "It Takes a Church to Raise a Christian: How the Community of God Transforms Lives," Brazos Press, 2004.

"The primary purpose of this book is not to stimulate theological argument, but to influence change at the level of congregational daily living. It is offered for the specific intention of assisting pastors and church leaders to create the kind of Christian communities in which God mystically transforms believers TOGETHER into the likeness of Christ as the primary means for reaching a lost world. Indeed, forming people into exceptional Christians - persons able to model Christian faith effectively to seekers - requires forming exceptional communities."

The church is the main source for spiritual growth.

"The church had smooth sailing for a while. All over the country-Judea, Samaria, Galilee-the church grew. They were permeated with a deep sense of reverence for God. The Holy Spirit was with them, strengthening them. They prospered wonderfully." Acts 9:31 (The Message)

Grace and Hope and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

So many people took the time to tell me or email me about my sermon on August 3rd dealing with our responsibilities. Most of us do not get away from the tyranny of too many demands. We wonder how we can enjoy peace when there are so many tasks that that we know will not get completed. We are quick to place demands on ourselves and slow to give ourselves grace. Peace eludes us as we see ourselves falling short of expectations. God is good at triage! Let your Lord be the source of setting your priorities and the source of grace when there is so much yet to be accomplished.

Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, {2} through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. {3} And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, {4} and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, {5} and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. (Romans 5:1-5 NRSV)

Grace and Hope and Peace,
Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of David TenBrook

If you were to flip a coin, you might get heads. But you might also get tails. If you flip it 10 times, you could get 7 heads and 3 tails or maybe 6 tails and 4 heads. If you flip that coin an infinite number of times, mathematics tells us we should come up with an equal number of heads and equal number of tails. So it is with any decision between two options with all things being equal: 50/50. So what does it mean if we can look at a situation in our lives where we "flip a coin" but it keeps coming up heads? That means not all things are equal and thus choices are having to be made. This means that repeated mistakes (and successes!) are products of choice within the circumstances life throws at us. This also means that trends in history, when they favor or disfavor anything means there are choices being made again and again. Where in your life do you see balance being consistently thrown off? Where is it that the circumstance ends and the choice begins? Why is it that the coin keeps landing on heads again, and again, and again, contrary to probability?

Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. William Jennings Bryan (1860 - 1925)
Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945)
Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. John 7: 16-18

David

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Each day we face the challenge of negotiating all of our responsibilities. How do you select the responsibilities that will get your attention? Often the loudest item gets our interest. Some stay away from religion just because they do not want any more "shoulds" in their lives. Yes indeed, God would like to influence our daily agendas. Do we have the courage to ask God to help us figure out what is and what is not our responsibility? Most of us keep adding to our lists and fail to enjoy declaring what is not our task to do.

I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love -- and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. (Philemon 1:7-9 NRSV)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

The scriptures have much to say about what is important comes first:

"But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:33 NRSV)
"You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye." (Matthew 7:5 NRSV)
"But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." (Matthew 19:30 NRSV)
"And whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:27-28 NRSV)
"He said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the greatest and first commandment." (Matthew 22:37-38 NRSV)
"We love because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19 NRSV)

Do your highest priorities come first? How high on your priority list is your Lord?

    Grace and Hope and Peace,

MEDITATION - From the Desk of David TenBrook

Mathematics and the divine are often related. From Muslims to Christians, Pythagoras to Einstein, history and the world are full of an interesting relationship between the most pure of sciences (and, at its purest, the most abstract) and the most pure of beings (and at His most pure, the most simultaneously abstract and imminent). A simple thought came to me a few years ago that has stuck with me ever since. It requires a quick review of basic math regarding fractions. Recall that if you put a larger number over a smaller number, you get a higher value. Conversely, if you put a larger number beneath a smaller number, you get a lesser value. For example, 2/1 is higher than 1/2. Also, recall that if we keep the denominator at 1, the higher the numerator gets then the larger and larger the result. Conversely, if the numerator stays at 1, but the denominator gets higher and higher, we approach 0.

Still with me? Now, let's consider that God is One. Therefore God = 1. And let us use the variable X to represent all of the things going on in your life: the hopes, dreams, fears, worries, needs, wants, etc. If we put X/1, then we are overwhelmed by the hugeness of our burdens. By putting X (all that X represents) above God, we cannot keep up with the size of it all. However, if we put all of those doubts, desires, etc. under God: 1/X, then our burden approaches 0 most rapidly. Do not let any part of your life take precedence over God, for it will multiply your burden. Instead, put all that you are and have under God and your burden will be nigh 0.

    Blessings,
    David

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Many of us try to handle stress by using "if only" or "when.then." In effect, we try to wish the stressful situations away. We say to ourselves: "When my financial worries are gone, I can enjoy life." Or, "If only this co-worker would cooperate, my stress level would go away." The person who can really handle stress does not depend on external situations or conditions to determine their inner tranquility. Yes, outward circumstances will affect us. However, when we spend the time that we would use to wish the situation to change by giving our stress to our Loving Lord and being quiet in the presence of our gracious Savior's Spirit, we build our confidence -- that we can handle whatever struggles comes our way!

"For me, there is no happiness without freedom, and freedom is not given to us by anyone; we have to cultivate it ourselves. By freedom I mean freedom from afflictions, freedom from anger, freedom from despair. If you have anger in you, you have to transform anger in order to get you freedom back." Thich Nhat Hanh
"Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; {29} he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. {30} Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven." (Psalms 107:28-30 NRSV)

    Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

G.K. Chesterton wrote, "The world will never starve for want of wonders; but only for want of wonder." With the spirit of thankfulness of God, can you be thankful for the wonder even in painful relationships, medical test, financial struggle, or even self doubt? This approach changes how we process our stress.

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful." (Colossians 3:15 NRSV)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Psalm 34 says "Blessed are all who dwell in the Lord! Abandon yourself into the Lord's hands, O you holy ones, For those who give themselves to the Lord lack no good thing. Everyone separated from love is empty and hungry within; But those who open their hearts to the Lord are filled to overflowing!" (Nan Merrill's translation)

Some have said true faith in God means reckless abandonment. When put that way, faith almost sounds irresponsible. We love to be in control. However, a vital relationship with our Lord means nothing less than letting go and letting God be in control. Can you let go of your tight grip on being your own god? For it is in the wide opening up of ourselves to God that we truly find the fullness of life.

        Growing in Faith together,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Each day of the St. Andrew's Mission Work Trip to Tijuana (June 14 to 21), they will be asking each other a great question. The Stress Busters small group that has been gathering on Wednesday have been asking the same good question. Spiritual Directors frequently ask this question as well. This question can also be a great way to start daily journaling: "Where do I see God?" In our busyness and in our anxiety, it is very easy to miss God at work right in our midst. Attentiveness to our Lord can bring us an abundance of blessings.

"For, the Lord dwells in every heart that is open and receptive;' Psalm 33:12 (Nan Merrill translation)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

C.S. Lewis, Oxford philosopher and literary scholar of the last century, described himself as a "lapsed atheist." For the first part of his intellectual life, he believed faith in Christ was foolish. Then he describes in "The Weight of Glory" his realization of missing something vital. He became aware of a "desire for our own far-off country, the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a turn we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited." In his search, Lewis suddenly was surprised to discover "God closed in on me."

Whether we observe it or not, God is actively seeking after us.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. (Psalm 139:23)
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:14-15)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Medical science is making remarkable discoveries about the relationship between the state of our minds and our physical health. Stress is important. Healthy stress gets our mind and body moving. Unhealthy stress reduces our productivity. As the book "Healthwise for Life" (assembled by several doctors and nurses) says: "Faith, prayer, and spiritual beliefs can play an important role in helping you recover from an illness." Managing our stress is one of the most important functions we can do. Mind, body and spirit each play an important role in how we enjoy living. God wants to help us manage all three. (Check out our upcoming stress class below.)

Listen to how Paul processes some of his stress:

"And, besides other things, I am under daily pressure because of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I am not indignant? If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus (blessed be he forever!) knows that I do not lie." (2 Corinthians 11:28-31 NRSV)
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

        Grace and Peace and Hope,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Frequently, most of us wake up with our mind buzzing with all the items we need to accomplish in the day ahead. We can sense urgency to get moving. These are the times that sitting still and BEING in God's presence can be most difficult. We long for the wonderful sensation of achieving our accomplishments. We hope we will then feel fulfilled when at the end of the day we can check several items accomplished! Yet even at the end of a productive day we can still feel empty. However if we start our day quietly getting filled with God's spirit then at the end of the day we experience the joy of God's presence whether we were productive or not. Often our productivity increases when we take time to be with our Loving Lord.

"Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil devices." (Psalms 37:7 NRSV)
"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth." {11} The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge." (Psalms 46:10-11 NRSV)
"Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." {22} When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:21-22 NRSV)

        Enjoying loving our Lord,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Do you wish some people were different? Sometimes we are harsh in our judgments of others and ourselves. We can get lost in our judgments. Bill Martin suggests that if we must make distinctions, try this exercise. On a sheet of paper label one column "Enough Love" and another column "Not Enough Love." List people in our life and place them in one category or the other as honestly as you can based on whether or not you think they receive enough love in their lives. You now have people categorized in the only manner that is helpful. Hey, here is a good list for prayer! Which column did you place yourself?

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back." (Luke 6:37-38 NRSV)

Enjoying loving our Lord and each other,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Nourishing our souls and supporting those in need defines some of the most important work of the Church. In fact, it is the unique work of the Church - no other organization can do it like the Church can. When we are doing both, some of our deepest needs are met, the lives of others improve and God is pleased. Now that's a win-win-win!

As you know, next Wednesday (April 9) and the following Sunday (April 13), the church and surrounding community will gather at St. Andrew's to build hands for those without. As I observe the joy in people as they build hands, excitement builds. The response has been outstanding! If you have not signed up, do so soon. We are asking St. Andrew's folks to be especially welcoming to new people at this event. In fact we are asking if you are working on a hand and you see someone you do not know waiting to build a hand, perhaps you could give your chair to them. There may be plenty of room for everyone or maybe not. This is an excellent opportunity for us to give a warm welcome to people in our community as they discover St. Andrew's is a place where God can touch them through you.

"But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." Mark 10:43-45

"Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers" Romans 12:9-13

        Enjoying serving our Lord together,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Recent scientific research agrees with the bible: we feel better when we give. Our quality of life increases when we give so others are living better. On Easter Sunday Michael Mendonca spoke during the sermon about how placing artificial hands on people in developing nations brought exhilaration and new life to people. It also dramatically changed Michael and his wife Janet's life. We are so glad that Michael has been connecting with the St. Andrew's community and our high school youth group.

We have a wonderful opportunity to experience the joy of assembling hands on April 9 and 13 (see below for more details). We have gotten the word out to the community and the interest is very high. Many new folks will be coming to our church because they too want to make a difference. I hope you can be there not just to assemble hands but to welcome new folks to your church. God is working on a win-win situation - people experience the freedom of a new hand and we get the experience the joy of giving! We get to be part of Easter events!

"The wicked borrow, and do not pay back, but the righteous are generous and keep giving;" (Psalms 37:21 NRSV)
Jesus said: "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16 NRSV)

        Enjoying serving our Lord together,

Please plan on attending for an hour and an half on Wednesday, April 9 between 6 and 8:30pm, or Sunday, April 13 between 2 and 5pm. St. Andrew's youth group and other adults are trained and ready to teach people of all ages how to construct one section of the hand assembly. MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Even when events or people indicate: "You do not belong," God's voice reassures us: "You do belong - to me." God really is the loving parent waiting with open arms for us who have wandered off. There really is a homecoming for us. Belonging means we have an address, a place where we are "at home." Our Brief Statement of Faith of our denomination says: "In life and in death we belong to God." God will not let us go as others might. God's belonging is more lasting, more constant, more loving than belonging to a job, school, club, or even a church or family can provide.

"God made us and we belong to Him." Psalm 100:3

"Can a woman forget the infant at her breast, or a loving mother the child of her womb? Even these forget, yet I will not forget you.I have engraved them on the palms of my hands." Isaiah 49:15-16

"What is your only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own but belong - body and soul, in life and in death to m faithful Savor Jesus Christ." - Heidelberg Catechism Q & A 1

        Peace and Grace,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

I heard a couple say recently to each other: "You know we could go on a wonderful cruise if we did not give so much money away." The other one said: "Thinking about all those hungry people, now that is an inconvenient truth!"

Note that the word "cheerful" in the verse below comes from the Greek word: hilaros, or hilarious.

"Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7 )

"In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" (Acts 20:35)

Together enjoying giving to the Lord for those in need,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Does your life have much tranquility in it? Can you sit still for five minutes? I mean really still - where your body, mind, soul are at rest - and you are wide awake? Can you sit still with no tension, no anxiety, nothing moving except your quiet breathing with no tension in your muscles? If you can do this for five then ten minutes, then you will begin to create room for the Spirit of God to speak. Being still requires lots of work at first, then it gets easier and more natural. The blessings are sure worth the labor.

"Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently for him; do not fret over those who prosper in their way, over those who carry out evil devices." (Psalms 37:5,7 NRSV)
"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge." (Psalms 46:10-11 NRSV)

May you experience the substantial Peace and Grace of our Lord,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Are you hard on yourself? Most of us can easily give grace to others, but resist giving ourselves a break. The parent in us keeps laying "shoulds" on ourselves. The parent in us most often sends a message that does not resonate with the voice of God. Yes, God wants us to make good healthy decisions and sacrifices. Our Lord has a strong desire for us to expend the energy it takes to pick up our cross and follow Christ. AND God wants us to first and foremost know how beloved we are and how acceptable we are especially when we are not productive. Actually, we will find we are more motivated when we realize how loved and valuable we are!

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God -- not the result of works, so that no one may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9 NRSV)

"Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, {5} and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us." (Romans 5:1-5 NRSV)

Grace and Peace of our Lord,
        Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Most of us are faced with many things to change, to fix or to make right. We have goals we want to reach, dreams we want to realize. But we must be careful. Such things have their place, but first we must make sure we can answer the question: "How is it now, with my soul!" If we can say: "It is well with my soul," all the rest of our demands will fall into perspective.

"For the hearts of those who call to Me, For those who cry out for wholeness, I shall make Myself known, says the Lord: I shall make Myself known in their hearts." (Psalm 12:5 translation by Nan Merrill)

"Come, O Lord, make your home in my heart." (Psalm 13:5 translation by Nan Merrill)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

When I was ordained, I was ordained to the ministry of "Word and Sacrament." As Presbyterians, we are people of the Bible and also people who celebrate the Sacraments. The Sacraments of Baptism and Communion center us on good news of what God has done and will be doing for us. Every Sunday of Lent including Easter, we will celebrate Holy Communion. In this sacrament, we find God's acceptance and nourishment. Christ meets us at the Table. John Calvin calls the bread and cup: "Pledges, testimonies and signs of God's grace and love toward us.

During Lent our messages will focus on this incredible sacrament. Each Sunday we will remember our Lord's Love at the Table with different ways. Enrich your spiritual life at Christ's Table this Lent.

"For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)

          Remember and Be Blessed,
          Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

My good friend and Presbyterian pastor, Dr. Geoff Nelson wrote his doctoral dissertation on dreams, which I hope will be published soon. Our mind's activities while we are sleeping can provide spiritual insights.

"This process of recalling and praying about our dreams will give us a fuller picture of ourselves and the things going on around us. That can only deepen our spiritual life. Our dreams are not God speaking to us, though God can speak through our dreams. Our dreams are not the secret to our life, though they can reveal much about ourselves that we may not otherwise catch. Our dreams are a part of who we are and as such, they will benefit our spiritual life in as much as we offer them to God, as much as we offer to God the rest of our life. There are a variety of prayer and devotional practices available to us in these times. Dreams have been a part of human experience since the beginning. They are a readily available, constantly occurring and helpful resource for our lives." - Geoff Nelson

I encourage you to enrich your spiritual life by journaling about your dreams and inviting God to be present with you at all times, including your sleep!

          Sleep well...
          Shel

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Imagine your boss thinks you are incompetent. Your children think you are way too controlling. Your spouse wishes you were like someone else. Do you need to change to make these people happy? No. Might you consider change within your own heart? Yes. Do they need to change to make your life more serene? No! Might you find serenity within your own heart? Yes! (Questions adapted from William Martin's book The Art of Pastoring.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? When fears assail me, rising up to accuse me, Each one in turn shall be seen in Love's light." Psalm 27:1-2
"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. {7} And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

          Grace and Peace!

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

What provides meaning in your life? Robert Webber in his book "Worship is a Verb," recalls listening to a Harvard psychologist on the radio. He suggested the idea that a meaningful and full life could be achieved by those who built their lives on three pillars: enjoyable work, a true experience of loving and being loved, and satisfying recreations. After commenting on these three pillars of life, he went on to say that he had recently added a fourth pillar - meaningful worship.

Meaningful worship in our lives feeds us as nothing else can.

"I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD!" (Psalms 122:1 NRSV)
"Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations." (Psalms 100 NRSV)

May your 2008 be FILLED with God Given Peace!

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

Do you know how to live with paradoxes? It is hard to live with what seems to be non-rationality.

"If you want to bring healing to people, show that you are wounded. If you want others to do what is right, show that you have done wrong. If you want others people to be filled with God, show that you are empty. If you want them to have life abundant, show them how to die. If you want every good for others, show them how to give everything up." - William Martin
Jesus said: "You must die in order to live." (John 11:25)
"But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." (Matthew 19:30)

MEDITATION - From the Desk of Shel White

In the comics last Tuesday, Bizarro illustrated two guys dressed in suits and dark glasses at the front door of a woman's home. They were displaying a badge and they said: "We're with the Department of Homeland Security. If you should happen to see anyone who, for any reason, isn't worried about their security - give us a call."

Yes indeed a person who is not worried about something is a rare person indeed! Perhaps that individual is keeping their eyes and ears closed. If not on a global scale, then jobs, relationships and our health can keep our anxiety high. Real relief from worry and fears comes not from the absence of troubling circumstances, but inner peace from God, regardless of the source of our worries! Many of our circumstances can't be changed, but how we process them psychologically and spiritually can make a huge difference. [Ray Campton will be supplying lots of causes and helpful insights on anxiety January 16 and 23rd. Sign up below.]

"Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7 NRSV)

May your 2008 be FILLED with God Given Peace!

          Shel
